Persistent, Depth‐Intensified Mixing During The Western Mediterranean Transition's Initial Stages
نویسندگان
چکیده
Major deep-convection activity in the northwestern Mediterranean during winter 2005 triggered formation of a complex anomalous deep-water structure that substantially modified properties Western deep layers. Since then, evolution this thermohaline structure, so-called Transition (WMT), has been traced through regularly sampled hydrographic station located on outer continental slope Minorca Island. A rapid erosion WMT's near-bottom signal was observed 2005–2007. The plausible interpretation as local bottom-intensified mixing motivates study. Here, WMT 2005–2007 is reproduced by means one-dimensional diffusion model including double-diffusive allows vertical variation background coefficient and includes source term to represent lateral advection injections from convection area. Using an optimization algorithm, best guess for depth-dependent obtained study period. its initial stages satisfactorily using simple conceptual model, indicating strong depth-intensified (K ∞ (z) ≈ 22 × 10−4 m2 s−1; z ⪆ 1,400 dbar) valid explanation observations. Extensive current observations gathered over 2018, first deep-convective intensively region, provide evidence topographically localized enhanced concurrent with newly formed dense waters flowing along-slope toward Algerian sub-basin. This transport-related boundary mechanism suggested be water-mass transformations off Minorca.

Does coarsening begin during the initial stages of spinodal decomposition?
The initial stages of spinodal decomposition were studied by subjecting a critical blend of model polyolefins to a pressure quench and monitoring the evolution by time-resolved small angle neutron scattering. Contrary to the predictions of the widely accepted Cahn-Hilliard-Cook theory, we demonstrate that coarsening of the phase-separated structure begins immediately after the quench and occurs...
متن کاملBiochemical changes during the initial stages of industrial lead exposure.
Biochemical measurements were carried out on 20 workers entering employment in a lead industry. Blood lead (Pb-B) urinary delta-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), and coproporphyrin (CP) levels were determined before entry and then at approximately weekly intervals for the first 12 weeks of employment. Levels of blood lead began to increase in all men within one week rising from an average pre-employme...

متن کاملThermal phase mixing during first-order phase transitions.
The dynamics of first order phase transitions are studied in the context of (3+1)-dimensional scalar field theories. Particular attention is paid to the question of quantifying the strength of the transition, and how ‘weak’ and ‘strong’ transitions have different dynamics. We propose a model with two available low temperature phases separated by an energy barrier so that one of them becomes met...
